It was the administrative center of the Hudson's Bay Company for the Red River Settlement. The fort depicted in the image represents how it stood in the early 1820's, later destroyed by a flood in 1826 and rebuilt 'Upper Fort Garry'. The fort was seized by Louis Riel, in 1869, during the Red River Rebellion.
