Octavo, pp. [i-vi] vii [viii] [1-2] 3-248, frontispiece illustration by Frederic Whiting, original green cloth, spine panel stamped in red, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. First edition. 1943 Christmas gift inscription from "Jodie & Michael" to Jack Yeats (Irish painter and brother of the poet William Butler Yeats) on front free endpaper. Michael Freyer (son of the author, Dermot) and his wife Jodie were friends of Jack Yeats and his neighbors in Fitzwilliams Square in London. Michael also owned a bookshop frequented by the painter. An interesting associational copy linking two eminent Anglo-Irish families. Nine short stories. "'Bogey' Baxter" is imbued with the uncanny mood of Irish folk beliefs. "Survival?" is a ghost story. "The Chestnut Trees" is another uncanny story. Top edge of text block a bit dusty, a nearly fine copy in nearly fine pictorial dust jacket with light shelf wear at edges. (#115768).
