These 2 Bibles, from 1848 and 1849, are from the families of Jacob Upham (born Oct. 29, 1798) and his wife Sarah (Hayward) (born August 31, 1804) of Amherst N.H. The second Bible is from the family of David Perkins Lowe (or Low) (born March 31, 1816) and his second wife Susan Upham (born April 14, 1832). The Upham Bible originally belonged to R. (Ruth) Elizabeth Upham, where the frontpaper is inscribed to her by her mother in 1849. From other sources I find that Ruth Elizabeth never married, and took care of her mother, who lived 3 years after Ruth's death in 1888, dying in 1891. The family records are mostly recorded on just 2 pages of the Bible's frontpapers, where the 10 children of Jacob and Sarah Upham's birth dates are entered; Jacob B., Sarah T., Mary, Emily D., Susan, John Henry, Ruth Elizabeth, Jesse H., George W., and Warren, who were born between 1824 and 1850. The 6 children of Mary Upham and her husband Gilman D. Kelley are recorded, being; Richard Gilman Kelly, Benjamin Payson Kelly, Marietta Kelly, Emily Maria , Sarah Esther, and Jacob Welles Kelly, who were born between 1848 and 1864. Also the 3 children of Sarah T. (Tamzan) Upham and her husband Samuel H. Vose are recorded, being: Elizabeth Sarah Vose, Josephine Vose, and Ellen Vose, who were born between 1850 and 1855. A few other entries record the birth and deaths of 2 Merriams and a Babcock in the 1850's. The second Bible has the frontpaper inscribed by D. P. Low (David P. Low), and his first marriage to Lucy-Ann Damon in 1843, his second marriage to Susan Upham in 1855, the marriage of David Brainard Lowe to Florence Belle Burnham in 1890, and the marriage of Elwin Smith to Crystal B. Lowe in 1913. David Perkins Low was born on March 31, 1816, and his wife Lucy-Ann Damon was born on June 1, 1819. Their 2 sons, William P. Low was born in 1845, and Alphonso D. Low in 1849 (dying in infancy). His second wife, Susan Upham was born on April 14, 1832 and died April 14, 1912. Their children were Ambry Della Low, David Brainerd Low, Jasper Low, and Susan Pauline Low, born between 1857 and 1873. 3 more births are Florence Belle Burnham in 1864, Florence Crystal Brainard Low in 1891, and Vivian Lowe Smith in 1914. The births and deaths of David P. Lowe's parents and 6 siblings are recorded: David Lowe on July 18, 1785, and his wife Betsy Damon on Sept. 11, 1789; Their children; George, Abigail, David P., Cyrus, Sumner (died in infancy), Newton, and Mary E., who were born between 1812 and 1826. Also recorded are the 10 children of Jacob Upham and his wife Sarah (Hayward). which are duplicated in the first Upham Bible. An enclosed paper records the birth dates of David Lowe's parents: Jonathan Lowe, born on Jan. 13, 1743, and his wife Sarah (Perkins) born on Oct. 1, 1744, together with the birth dates of their 11 children, Isaac P., Sarah, Elizabeth, Jonathan, David, Hannah, John, Jeremiah, Mary, Asa, and Susan, who were born between 1778 and 1798. The Upham Bible is a small 12mo size, with rubbed leather. The Lowe Bible is quarto sized in worn, full calf. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. N° de réf. du libraire 15229
