First edition. viii, 392pp., a frontispiece portriat, full-page and in-text black and white illustrations,and a folding map of Eastern Central Africa at the end of the book. This is an account of the life and work of James Hannington (1847-1885), the first Anglican bishop of Eastern Equatorial Africa. He went out for the Church Missionary Society to Uganda in 1882; visited Palestine on his way to Africa; led an expedition which reached Lake Victoria in 1885, and was murdered by order of the King of Uganda. The book is bound in the original brown cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine and front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear on the boards and two small faint stains on the front board. The spine ends are bumped with a little damage to the cloth. The contents are tight and clean with a little foxing on the fore edge of the text block. On a few pages the foxing has seeped a little way into the fore margin.
