The complete suite of line engravings by Thomas Piroli after Michelangelo's "Final Judgment" in the Sixtine Chapel. Includes a beautifully engraved title-page (with line-engraved vignette), two leaves of explanatory text, and 16 additional large folio full-page line-engravings. Piroli's dramatic, sculptural, neo-classical prints, often after designs by John Flaxman, were an important influence on William Blake and other British and Continental artists of the early 19th century. This suite is particularly important both for its rarity and for the fact that it was based on one of the major works of European art, and thus was instrumental in creating an image of that work for the many Europeans who could not travel to see the original. Printed on extremely fine wove paper. Large folio (21 inches, 53 cm). Bound in contemporary morocco-backed embossed boards, spine gilt in six compartments. Minimal wear to extremities of binding. A little faint foxing on a few leaves, but generally fine and bright. A very attractive copy, with large margins. Not in Cicognara, Brunet, or Graesse, all of whom cite several other works by Piroli.
