Kidnapped business tycoons are taken to Social Island. Frederick Upham Adams (1859-1921), inventor and author, was born in Boston, Massachusetts 10 December 1859, to an American Civil War veteran/mechanical engineer. In 1886 he invented the electric light post. He was the coeditor of the social reform magazine THE NEW TIME in 1897 and 1898. PRESIDENT JOHN SMITH, his utopian novel advocating "majority rule" which appeared in 1897 from radical socialist publisher Charles H. Kerr. He wrote several other economic novels, JOHN BURT (1903) and JOHN HENRY SMITH . (1905). He died on 28 August 1921 at Larchmont, New York. Kopp 722. Smith, American Fiction, 1900-1925 A-62.
