Fabric neatly split along most of rear joint; institutional markings; very small chip to front cover, still overall Good in blue cloth with blindstamped basket weave design, emblem and lettering in gilt. The author, Sigurdur Julius Johannesson (not to be confused with Sigurdur J. Johannesson - the latter also known s "S. J.") was "one of the most prominent and popular of the Icelandic Canadian poets. From the time of his arrival in Canada in 1899, he played a . . . prominent part in community life as a physician, journalist, poet [and translator], temperance worker and a zealous advocate of social and political reform", according to the scholar Kristjanson (The Icelandic People in Manitoba, p. 489). Watson Kirkonnell includes the author's poetry in his anthology, Canadian Overtones, Columbia Press, 1935. SUBJECTS: Poetry. CONSIDERABLE CANADIAN CONTENT: One poem dedicated to Icelandic-Canadian poet Stephan G. Stephansson; two poems on "Kanada"; one on 'Western Islanders'; another deals with Icelandic-Canadian clergyman Jon Bjarnason, of Winnipeg, another deals with the Argyle district, Manitoba.
