Titre : LADY VALWORTH'S DIAMONDS, AND THE HAUNTED ...
Éditeur : J. B. Lippincott Company, Philadelphia
Date d'édition : 1887
Reliure : Hardcover
Edition : 1st Edition
Octavo, pp. [1-4] 2-319 [320: blank], original marbled boards with red cloth shelf back, spine panel stamped in gold and black. First combined edition. Two criminous tales by an immensely popular late Victorian Irish writer, both published separately in the U.S. in 1886. This appears to be the first printing of the combination as well as the first hardcover appearance in America of "The Haunted Chamber." Both are tragic melodramas; the first a story of a young man who steals his mother's jewels, the second a Gothic tale concerning a secret room in an ancient castle in which the current heir is imprisoned by an evil cousin. Neither stories are supernatural, although the haunted chamber in the shunned castle tower has a dark history "ghastly enough to make the stoutest heart quail." "The Haunted Chamber" is listed by Bleiler (1978), p. 64 and Hubin (1994), p. 250. Hubin does not record LADY VALWORTH'S DIAMONDS. Edges of boards rubbed, else a very good copy. An uncommon book.
