Reliure : Soft cover

Edition : 1st Edition

Description :

Octavo, pp. [1-5] 6-192, original pictorial wrappers. First edition. A sentimental melodrama from this popular and prolific author, declaring her purpose in a preface, "to reveal the sacred contentment and beauty which the gentler sex ever sway over wayward mankind, kindling in his nature all that is good and promising." "The pedestal position of women, so widely accepted during this period and for years to follow, ceded women the moral high ground while denying them legal equality and practical opportunities. Small compensation, feminists argue (in the open, at least), while seeming in some cases to wish to hold onto the avowed moral superiority of their gender. In any event, Libbey can be seen as an antagonist of the usual feminist position. The impetus of her novels, as Blain et al. point out (see below), is to urge her working-class female readers to bag an eligible bachelor and get him to the altar so she can take things easy -- or at least easier. Libbey practiced what she preached. Though earning at least $50,000 annually with her novels, she quit writing as soon as she married a (presumably successful) lawyer." - Robert Eldridge. Wright III 3324 (mentioning no copy seen). Blain, Grundy and Clements, The Feminist Companion to Literature in English, p. 657. Portions of front cover chipped at edges, small piece clipped from front cover near front spine fold and pieces cut from tops of first two leaves (presumably to remove previous owner's names, the latter with loss of text on the verso of the contents page); the rear cover looks like one supplied from a different book. A fair copy only, but a very scarce book. (#146873). N° de réf. du libraire 146873
