A fine woodcut by H.E. Bergman titled The Last Stretch. Exhibited in the Society of Canadian Painters and Etchers and has the original label at the back. Bergman was born in Dresden, Germany, where he studied at the Art and Trade School. In 1913 he came to Canada and a year later he joined Brigden?s Limited in Winnipeg. He spent many years there as a wood engraver for the Eaton?s catalogue. Bergman worked in pencil, watercolour, oil paint, colour wood block printing, and was best known for his fine black and white wood engravings. His work was mainly inspired by music, beauty in nature, and wild, urban, and industrial landscapes. Much of his subject matter included Winnipeg, rural Manitoba, Lake of the Woods, southern Ontario, and Banff.His work is held in several collections, including that of the Winnipeg Art Gallery, Glenbow (Calgary, Alberta), and the National Gallery of Canada.Throughout his time in Winnipeg he became a charter member of the Winnipeg Art Gallery, charter member and past president of the Manitoba Society of Artists, a member of Painters and Etchers Society of Ontario, and a member of the Canadian Handicrafts Guild. , Image Size : 114x104 (mm), 4.50x4.10 (Inches), Platemark Size : , Paper Size : 171x152 (mm), 6.75x6.00 (Inches), Black & White, Woodcut.
