The reputation of Elizabeth Gaskell is undergoing a renaissance as we enter the new millennium. The variety of her work and the range of her acquaintance makes her one of the most interesting literary figures of her century. This new collection of her letters illustrates the richness and diversity of her involvement in a remarkable range of social and literary activities. Out of the 270 letters included in this volume only 40 have been previously published.

About the Author:

John Chapple is Emeritus Professor at the University of Hull.

Alan Shelston is Senior Lecturer in English Literature at the University of Manchester.

Located in the heart of historic downtown Springfield, Prairie Archives has been serving Central Illinois since 1973. We have occupied three locations since our founding and our current store has been located at 522 E. Adams since 1992. We have approximately 250,000 books in stock, documents, manuscript material, posters, prints, comics, collectibles, magazines, political buttons, postcards and lots more! If you don't see a title you're looking for, please feel free to inquire; only a small part of our stock is catalogued. Our store hours are 10-5 Central time Monday through Saturday. We also carry a line of t-shirts, including the ever-popular "Abraham Lincoln: They'd have to shoot me to get me back to Springfield" and "Frank Lloyd Wright: I can design a building that would look good even in Springfield". Please inquire about our other designs, sizes and prices. And of course, we can't leave without mentioning Hannah, our golden retriever. She has run things here since she was a puppy [October, 1994]; she brings more business to the shop than anyone else. Always friendly, cheerful, and affectionate (especially when someone has food!) She has recently been joined by Ruby, a young and energetic black lab. Hannah and Ruby say "Come See Us!"
