Admitted to bar in Fauquier County (1780) ; practiced, Richmond, Va. , from 1783. Member of Virginia executive council (1782-95) , of House of Burgesses (1782-88). Became recognized Federalist leader in Virginia. Served as one of American commissioners to France (1797, 1798) to obtain redress for French hostile actions. Member, U. S. House of Representatives (1799-1800). U. S. Secretary of State (1800-01) , chief justice of U. S. Supreme Court (1801-35). Fundamental principles for constitutional interpretation were established by his important decision as in Dartmouth College vs. Woodward, McCulloch vs. Maryland, etc. ; Ex-Library.
