Howes H-48 **** Randall wrote the authoritative biography of Jefferson, a comprehensive, 2000 page, three-volume biography of his political hero. He is the only biographer that was allowed to interview Jefferson's family, and obtained access to original letters and materials he rightly feared would eventually be lost. The resulting Life of Thomas Jefferson (1858) provided the most detailed study of Jefferson available for more than a century. Randall portrayed a man of sensibility, an apostle of reason who refused to play dirty when political enemies sought to blacken his name. In addition, Randall drew upon his own extensive correspondence with Jefferson's several surviving grandchildren who had lived at Monticello through most of their grandfather's retirement years. Laudatory by design, Randall's LIFE OF JEFFERSON emphasized the straightforward, good-hearted Jefferson ("There was a sympathy between his heart and the great popular heart, which nothing ever did, ever can, shake.")"(ANB).
