A propos de ce titre

Synopsis :

The selection includes prose-poems and poetry from earlier books Truck; Ten Cents; Skyliner; and 9:15; as well as previously unpublished work. Merrill Gilfillan explores the essential content of our culture(s) through a linguistic 'jump-cut' editing technique. He uses any and all the phenomena of human experience as information, and refuses to see any category of experience as inherently more significant than any other: sunset over the petrochemical plants of Elizabeth, N.J.; a string quartet; Mexican table manners; Nixon in Venezuela; a toothache; or gas-pumps in the hills of Kentucky are all equally informative film-clips in his cross-cultural collage.

Proposed Elegy for Hart Crane

What a place for a garden,
pain like a pocketful of mints,
we live on each other.

As if an immigrant family crossed
some mysterious brightly colored bridge
and wandered into this lung-like valley
selling hot sandwiches and aerial photographs
of the Aztec dead we live on each other.

Nothing was planned without noise;
after dark the siren comes on in sheets,
she turns over loudly.

I think I could paint
when her back's turned.
Her back.

Or walk a little farther upstream
testing the furniture and the hair
in this area.

Yes it's a beautiful country,
flowerlike and huge, all the more graceful
when you consider it's rolling
and our many coffees rarely spill
but sometimes it takes itself away.
