Language: English . Brand New Book. Colonized since the 1600s, Taiwan is largely a nation of settlers, yet within its population of twenty-three million are 500,000 Aboriginal people. In their quest to learn about disease and evolution, genetic researchers have eagerly studied this group over the past thirty years but have often disregarded the rights of their subjects. Examining a troubling revival of racially configured genetic research and the questions of sovereignty it raises, Living Dead in the Pacific details a history of exploitation and resistance that represents a new area of conflict facing Aboriginal people both within Taiwan and around the world. Synopsis : Taiwan is home to over 500,000 Aboriginal people who are little known outside this Chinese-settler-dominated island-nation. Over the past thirty years, Taiwanese and Western researchers have subjected Aborigines to intensive genetic research. This book shows the problematic nature of the research, which purports to advance knowledge and cure disease yet portrays Taiwan Aborigines as genetically ill-suited to modern life. It reveals how this research is intertwined with Taiwanese nationalist identity claims and diplomatic relations in the Pacific and with biotechnology industrial development. Munsterhjelm teases out the complex narratives that at once represent Aborigines' connections to the ancient past and cast doubt on their place in contemporary society, ultimately constructing them as "living dead."
