CONSIDERABLE CANADIAN CONTENT. Includes poems on Icelandic-Canadian community - e.g., poem re Gimli: in Manitoba, pp 68-69; on New Iceland [Gimli, MB area], p. 20; on Winnipeg's muddy streets (p. 101). The author, Thorsteinn Johannesson of Steinsstadur, came to "New Iceland" in Manitoba, Canada, in 1876, from Iceland. He was a native of the Thingeyjarsysla region of Northern Iceland, was born at Tjorn in Adalreykjadalur on Fb.13.1837, the son of Johannes Oddsson and Gudny Kristjansdottir. He and his wife first settled near Gimli, Manitoba. He then moved to the Hallson district of Dakota Territory. Around 1907 he returned to Iceland for two years, but came back in 1909, settling in 1913 in the Mouse River Valley. He died at Bantry on Aug. 26, 1918. He wrote both poetry and prose, publishing both an anthology of verse and a novel entitled Dalurinn Minn. Source Islenzkar Aeviskrar, vol 5, p. 530.
