S.l.s.d. (Louvain ca. 1920). Portfolio with 10 original etchings mounted under passe-partout, size 10 x 15 cm, published in a set of 50 numbered copies (this is set 46), all etchings signed and numbered in pencil by the artist. On the inside of the severely worn paper portfolio is tipped in a printed list of the etchings in French and English. Ferdinand Giele (1867-1929) was professor at the Louvain Art Academy. He resided in Great Britain during the First World War (from 1916 to 1919) where he worked e.g. with Frank Short. The etchings illustate the devastation of Louvain inner city by the invading German army, a war crime which became widely known and received even headlines in the Times in 1914.
