Synopsis : As one of America's greatest cultural assets, New Hampshire's MacDowell Colony has hosted some of the twentieth century's most respected musicians. By first presenting a well-informed survey of nineteenth and early twentieth-century artist colonies in the United States, a clear context for the founding of the MacDowell Colony in 1907 is presented. The unique formative pressures, influences, and motivations of the Colony are discussed in depth, offering the reader an informed understanding of its unique tradition of excellence. Subsequent material in this volume chronicles the pioneering work accomplished at the Colony from 1910 through the end of the twentieth century, when the community began to attract the attention of public and charitable endowments. The expanding reputation of the colony is seen to have been accompanied by the perpetuation of high achievement by colony composers decade after decade. Comprehensive appendixes include transcriptions of interviews with Barbara Kolb, Russell Oberlin, Howard Shanet, and many other notable associates of the Colony. These interviews reveal some of the community's most endearing characteristics, and document the profound importance of place and community in the creative process.

Critique: The MacDowell Colony is a magnificent place with an intriguing history. It's about time there was a book on it, and I am glad Bridget Falconer-Salkeld has now filled that void. -- Phillip Ramey, composer For as long as I can remember, the MacDowell Colony has been a symbol of American musical creativity. This study should be of great interest to all lovers of serious music. -- Russell Oberlin, Founding Member, New York Pro Musica, Fulbright Senior Research Scholar Edward MacDowell, who had the dream of turning his beloved New Hampshire retreat into an artists' colony, was a distinguished composer who was also an accomplished visual artist and a fine writer. How appropriate, then, that the site that bears his name should have become a hallowed ground for so many artists in so many different fields. The privacy granted to those who come to create there has long prevented the wider world from understanding the Colony's importance in American artistic life. Bridget Falconer-Salkeld has given us a precious glimpse into the workings and the influence of this American Treasure. -- Steven Ledbetter, Musicologist Bravo for [this] wonderful study of the MacDowell Colony. -- Ned Rorem, Author and Composer Founded in 1907, the MacDowell Colony in New Hampshire has hosted some of the last century's most respected musicians. This history offers readers a glimpse behind the scenes of this renowned artists' community. Coverage ranges from an examination of earlier artists' colonies in America, through the early years of the community, and on to recent years, when the MacDowell Colony began to attract the attention of public and charitable endowments. Transcriptions of interviews with Barbara Kolb, Russell Oberlin, and other notable associates of the community are found in the appendix. Reference and Research Book News Bridget Falconer-Salkeld's new book, The MacDowell Colony: A Musical History of America's Premier Artists' Community, documents the importance of place and community in the creative process by examining the influences behind the founding of the Colony, and chronicling the innovative musical work created here. The Macdowell Colony Newsletter ...[Bridget Falconer-Salkeld] probably now knows more about the colony than anyone else on either side of the Atlantic. The Brighton Graduate Falconer-Salkeld...offers an extensively documented examination of the colony's development plus numerous anecdotes about everyday life there...Recommended. CHOICE
