A propos de cet article

Engraved elevated map of Macedonia and Greece down to the Gulf of Lepanto (Korintiakós Kolpós). 41x50 cm. With two cartouches, one decorative. Illustrated with a ship at sea. Amsterdam about 1640. Edge reinforced. In limpid protective pocket. * From 1570 to 1670 the Low Countries produced some of the greatest mapmakers of the world. Centres of production were at first in Antwerp and Duisburg, and later in Amsterdam. Dutch mapmakers represented state of the art of mapmaking according to knowledge of their time, craftmanship, magnificence of presentation and richness of decoration. Some of the most respected mapmakers were Willem Blaeu and his sons, Joan and Cornelis. Willem Jaszoon Blaeu was born in Alkmaar in 1571 and died at Amsterdam, 1638. Joan was born in Amsterdam 1596, and died in the same city 1673, as well as Cornelis, who died in 1642. The Blaeu maps covered a wide range of topics from Cosmography, Uranography, Hydrography, Chorography and Topography, the four branches being represented by the following publications: 1599 »Terrestrial and Celestial«, 1608 »Sea Atlas Licht der Zeevaert«, 1630 »World Atlas Appendix«, 1644 »General Atlas of Towns«. All were published in constantly improved and expanded editions. The elder Blaeu, Willem, was a surveyor, globe-maker and publisher. Blaeu had studied under the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe. Up to 1617 Willem Blaeu used his patronymic »Janszoon«, signing his work »Guilielmus Janssonius« or »Joannes Janssonius«. His later work was signed »Guilielmus« or »G.Blaeu«. In 1606 Blaeu produced a map of Holland, and in 1605 a map of Spain, and a large world map. Of this world map only one copy is known. It belongs to the New York Hispanic Society. In 1606 Blaeu produced another map of the world (one copy being preserved in the Royal Geographical Society Library). Later a corrected edition was issued showing the Strait of Le Maire (discovered in 1616) and a further edition with the imprint »Janssonio« changed to »Blaeu«. In 1608 he issued the now rare large-scale maps of the four known continents Europe, Asia, Africa and America. All these are now rare. Before 1630 he had issued 17 maps, and in 1629 he acquired the plates of 37 maps from Jodocus Hondius. From this small beginning sprang the great series of atlases that culminated in the Atlas Maior. The editions of the Terrestrial or World Atlases of Blaeu are as follows: (x)1629 »Preliminary essay«, (17 maps by Blaeu and 37 of Hondius), (x)1630 »Atlantis Appendix, Amsterdam«. (16 maps, no text). (x)1631 »Appendix Theatri A. Ortelii et Atlantis G. Mercatoris, Amsterdam)« (117 maps and text). 1634 »Novus Atlas« (161 maps, German text). 1635 »Theatrum Orbis Terrarum sive Atlas Novus«, 2 vols. (Four editions with text in Latin, Dutch, German and (x)French). 1640 »Theatrum«, 3 vols.( Four editions,(x)Latin, Dutch, (x)German, (x)French). 1640-5 »Theatrum« 4 vols.( Four editions, (x)Latin, Dutch, (x)German, [French). 1648-54 »Theatrum« 5 vols. (x)Latin, German, French). 1648-58 »Theatrum«, 6 vols. (Latin, German, French, Spanish, (x)Dutch). 1662 »Atlas Maior« (Latin text, 1 vols.), (French text, 12 vols.), (Dutch text, 9 vols.), (Spanish text, 10 vols.), (German text, 9 vols.). Those editions marked with an (x) are to be found in the British Museum. In 1648 J.Blaeu compiled a large map of the world »Nova totius Terraarum Orbis Tabula« on twenty sheets. One copy is preserved in the Royal Geographical Society and another in the British Museum. For this magnificent production Blaeu searched the records of all nations, the map bearing names and annotatons in dutch, English, Latin, French, Spanish, etc., and it was revised practically up to the day of publication.
