(Vol. 2 also has 5 woodcuts in text.) NOTE: ALL THE PLATES IN THIS SET WERE SUPERBLY HAND-COLORED.Ward was the British Charge d'Affaires in Mexico from 1825 - 1827; his account of Mexico is particularly notable in the area of mining -- British interest in Mexican mining was at a high pitch, and Ward's job was to investigate the viability for investment -- though he saw much of the country. The plates are superb, from drawings by Ward's, wife on the spot, This is one of the finest early travel books on Mexico, observed shortly after it had gained independence from Spain -- Streeter calls it the "classic book on Mexico." An appendix, not by Ward, includes sections on Texas, Sinaloa and Sonora. (Sabin 101302) This copy has been professionally rebound with new leather spines over the original boards; spine is in compartments, gilt-tooled, red title pieces: plates still protected by original tissues, without any of the foxing that often accompanies these plates. Very nice copy. N° de réf. du libraire 7218
