Titre : Minningarrit um Séra Jón Bjarnason: 1845-...

Description :

PUBLISHER: Winnipeg : Gefi út af hinu Evangeliska lúterska kirkjufélagi Íslendinga í Verturheimi, 1917. DESCRIPTION: 157 p. : ports. ; 24 cm. SUBJECTS: Bjarnason, Jón, 1845-1914; Icelanders--Manitoba; Lutherans--Biography; Manitoba--Emigration and immigration--Biography. Rev. Bjarnason of Manitoba is the subject of this commemmorative work and biography. Contributions are mostly by prominent Icelandic-Canadian writers and clergymen. Bjarnason was the first clergyman among the Icelandic immigrant communities of Manitoba and a "a towering . . . ecclesiastical leader, often considered greatest of them all", according to Stefan Einarson (see Einarson's A History of Icelandic Literature, N. Y., Johns Hopkins Press, 1957, p 340; also the same author's History of Icelandic Prose Writers, 1800-1940, Ithica, N. Y., Cornell, 1948.). Bjarnason's sermon's have historic significance in that he was the more liberal clergyman whose disputes with the conservative Reverend Pall Thorlaksson split the Canadian Icelandic community. An Icelandic high school in Winnipeg, the Jón Bjarnasson Academy, was named after him. Reverend Bjarnason was liberal in views, and his split with rival clergyman, the more conservative Rev. Pall Thorlaksson divided the community on religious and other matters - see Kristjanson. Very Good+ in full burgundy leather binding; all edges gilt; gilt lettering on front cover and spine; scarcely noticeable rubbing to edges. Referenced in Hjartar, p. 34. Peel (3rd Ed.) #3974.
