Quarto, pp iv, viii, . With 2 maps, one of the western coast of America, the other, folding, of Europe; a portrait engravings of the young Mozart, and several tables, one of which is folding. An odd assortment of essays, notably containing "Tracts on the Possibility of reaching the North Pole (124 pp) and "Journal of a Spanish Voyage in 1775, to explore the Western Coast of N. America [pp 470 - 534]." This latter is the voyage of the Sonora, under Capt. Juan Francisco de la Bodega (from home Bodega Bay is named), written by the pilot Maurelle: this was the only account in English of this important voyage until recent times. Provenance: this copy is from the library of Sir William Curtis, Bart., 1752 - 1829. Curtis was Lord Mayor of London, an amateur cellist of note, and is represented in the National Portrait Gallery by 8 sittings. Full smooth calf, expertly rebacked. Near fine copy.
