Written with the friendly assistance of several of the most Eminent Masters and Engrav’d by Geo. Bickham. The whole embellished with beautiful Decorations for the Amusement of the Curious. London. Printed for and sold by H. Overton at the White House without Newgate. 1743 Hardcover. Folio. Bound in full leather. Original boards and professionally re-built spine in sympathetic (matching) leather. Gold lettering on the spine. 212 single-sided pages. Each is an engraving, beautifully printed on only one side of the page. The first 5 pages and the final page have been repaired (laid down with new margins on good laid paper). New free endpaper and blank added at the front and a new free endpaper at the rear. Original attached endpapers. Front endpaper has a name and date (1827) written on it. The repair work done on this volume is expertly done – new spine, repaired pages, new hinges, new headbands – are visible. I suspect it was re-sewn as well, as the binding is tight. With new hinges, the book opens and closes easily and opens without damage to any page. Some very mild foxing here and there to plates, but by and large very good condition. Bickham’s masterpiece. His copperplate engravings on penmanship and business forms were originally issued in serial (over 8 years!) before being collected into a single volume. This is a gorgeous, complete copy.
