In the original wrappers, with a small piece missing from the front panel near the joint, not affecting the text. Wrapper has the legend from Thomas Paine "Man has no property in man". Considered incendiary at the time, Cross work is an indictment of slavery, and an appeal for "equal rights" for the "colored people" of the South. Cross, regarding lynching, says "At the very time contributions were collected to civilize the colored heathen, southern ministers were instructing their Christian congregations how to practice lawlessness and brutality on the blacks at home.".
