A propos de cet article

"Up until this date nothing had come from the hands of American engravers to equal in delicacy of handling, and beauty of finish, these fine portraits. "--Sabin. This work was issued in four volumes over a five year period (1834 - 1839), and this first volume was issued by two different publishers. In addition to the fine engravings, there is a biography of each personage written by John Quincey Adams, Prof. Ticknor, Dr. Francis, etc. This copy is quite heavily foxed with some old marginal staining, nearly all plates are foxed and/or stained; the plates themselves (the actual engravings) are for the most part clean and bright, but the white borders of all plates are foxed. Probably missing the front free end paper. Most of the text pages are lightly foxed. One page torn with no loss of text. 35 plates called for and 35 plates present. Child scrawl on end papers. Still, an early illustrated bit of Americana. Spine poor, covers worn with weak hinges. This is volume 1 only (of four which were issued in consecutive years) and is complete in itself. Ref: Howes H443, Sabin 31577 ; B&W Illustrations; tall 8vo 9" - 10" tall; Unpaginated pages. N° de réf. du libraire 3196
