A propos de cet article

Basileae (Basel), Hieronymus Frobenius & Nicolaus Episcopius, 1552, in-folio, 30.5 x 21.5 cm, ca. 212pp, ca. 101 woodcuts (many signed FL. intall comord PR), old half vellum binding with marbled boards, in excellent condition. Unfortunately the book which was in all probabilty rebound in the 17th or 18th century lacks the following leaves; d3, h4, l4, p4, p(5), r4. We could not collate our copy with another one but according to Adams these leaves should be present This main part is the official handbook of the civil and military officials in the Roman empire, 4th-5th c. This is the earliest printed edition. It contains a dedication to Andreas Vesalius, an essay by Beatus Rhenanus about the position of Illyria, Andreas Alcatius' De magistratibus, civilibusque et militaribus officiis, description of Rome and Byzance (Descriptio urbis Romae, Urbis Constantinopolitanae descriptio), the main works (Notitia dignitatum omnium, tam civilium quam militarium in partibus Orientis, Notitia dignitatum omnium, tam civilium quam militarium in partibus Occidentis), the important Roman warfare source text De rebus bellicis and to top it off, the short Altercatio Hadriani Aug. & Epicteti philosophi. The compiler, Bilde von Rheinau, 1485-1547, was a famous humanist, a friend of Erasmus. N° de réf. du libraire 26526
