The majority are zoological and include his observations on the secondary sexual characteristics in birds and on the air sac in birds. Also included are: a paper on the descent of the testis; ?Proposals for the recovery of persons apparently drowned?, in which he established the essentials of treatment, advocating ventilation of the lungs with a double bellows (Huston, Resuscitation, 45); a paper on his precise observations on body temperature and the mechanisms for maintaining it (Fulton, Selected Readings in Physiology, pp. 335?337); a paper on digestion, in which he suggested the importance of acidity in gastric juice (see Foster, Lectures, pp. 220?222); a description of the branches of the olfactory nerve; and most famously the first publication of the paper on the structure of the placenta, in which he claimed priority over his brother William in the discovery of the circulatory relationship between the placenta and the uterus (Radcliffe, Milestones in midwifery, 58).
