Contemporary mottled calf, spines gilt in compartments with red and brown morocco labels, triple gilt fillet on sides, red edges, marbled endpapers. Joints cracking at ends but still quite tight, a few small chips from head of spine or edges, small stains on 2L4 of vol. 1, some very minor foxing, but essentially a fine, bright copy. FIRST COLLECTED EDITION IN FRENCH, the most complete early edition of Franklin?s scientific writings in any language. The first volume contains the first collected edition in French of Franklin?s correspondence on electricity with Peter Collinson, Experiments and Observations on Electricity, described by Printing and the Mind of Man as ?the most important scientific book of eighteenth-century America.? The second volume includes other wide-ranging works by Franklin on ventilation, the art of swimming, inoculation, sound, meteors, stoves, correspondence, etc., some of which had not previously been published.
