The complete background data necessary to fully understand and appreciate each engraving is provided as well as the historical and artistic forces that produced such genius. The text is evocative of the creative impulses and historical imperatives that resulted in this wealth of architecture and design. Each engraving can be seen in its necessary context to fully comprehend the time in which they were created and the significance to that time. Among the many reproductions are the splendours and intricacies of the carvings of Wolsey's Hall and Hampton Court that remain unrivaled throughout the world. The tapestries belonged to Henry VIII and were reputed to be done by a student of the incomparable Raphael. The monuments to both Queen Elizabeth and her nemesis, Mary, Queen of Scots, are shown revealing the history and magnificence of a past age of architecture. The magnificence of St. George's Hall, Windsor, with its dark Gothic influences and the colossal dimensions of Whitehall Chapel are shown in all their vivid detail.
