Description :

Bound in full, worn calf, with both covers detached and without a spine. There is no title page to the Old Testament, with some beginning pages missing. The New Testament has it's own title page with the printing date of 1795. This Bible contains the original family records of Joseph Bradley, born on July 8, 1762, who was the second of nine children of William and Sarah (Smith) Bradley of Plaistow, New Hampshire. William and Sarah (Smith) Bradley had 9 children born between 1760 and 1777. They were Hannah, Joseph, Nathaniel, William, Susanah, Sarah, Benjamin, William, Betty. Joseph Bradley married Patty on Nov. 19, 1799. and had 4 children born between 1800 and 1809 - Hitty, Joseph (died in infancy), Polly, and Isaac. The frontpaper is inscribed - "Isaac Bradley, Newburyport, Mass." "Bought by his father in the year 1800". "Given by Mrs. Isaac Bradley to Alice Bradley, 1/11/1902". The back of the New Testament's title page is inscribed - "The Death of our Grandmother". "Died at Notingham on the 5th day of April A.D. 1801 the widow Hannah Smith, the widow of Mr. Saml. Smith aged 92. Leaving 9 children - seven sons and two daughters and one hundred and ninety two grand, and great grandchildren, forty of whom followed her to the grave". From other sources I find that the original owner of this bible, Joseph Bradley, was the son of Sarah (Smith) Bradley who was the second of 12 children born to Hannah (Page) Smith and Samuel Smith Jr. Hannah (Page) Smith was born in Haverhill, Mass. on June 4, 1708-1709, and was the daughter of Abraham Page, born on Dec. 15, 1683 in Haverhill; and Judith (Worthen) Page who was born in 1684 in Amesbury, Mass. Samuel Smith Jr. was born on May 1, 1696 in Haverhill, Mass. Their 12 children were born between 1731 and 1752, and were Timothy, Sarah, Samuel (died in infancy), Samuel, Nathaniel, Joseph, Hannah, Emerson, Daniel, John, Page, and Susanna.
