Johannes Coccejus 1603-1669, professor at Bremen, Franeker and Leiden was a theologian and philologist, who was a main character in the reformed protestantism of the seventeenth century. Coccejus' theology is often described as covenant or federal theology. His ideas were to be found in more moderate form by Bullinger and Olevian. Coccejus is became mostly famous for his conflict with Voetius about the covenant theology and the Sabbath. This conflict divided the reformed church until far in the eighteenth century in the quarreling parties of Cocceians and Voetians.
