Description :

Nürnberg, Peter Wagner, 1490, chancery in-4°, ( 194 x 136 mm), 14 leaves, A8B6 ( complete), bound in 18th century half vellum, with boards covered with decorated paper ( papier dominoté). Binding with some traces of use and a circular inventory label on the spine. Interior with some browning. Small perpendicular wormhole in a few leaves. The first leaf with a tear in the fold. Still a good/fine and complete copy of this Nürnberg incunable. From the collection of the famous German bookcollector and bookbinding specialist Ernst Kyriss (1881 - 1974), with his tiny ( 4 x 3 mm) ex-libris stamp on the first page. The author (Venezia 1454 - Roma 1493) was an Italian Renaissance humanist and diplomat. His first assigment , as representative of the Venetian Republic , was a journey to Bruges (Flanders) to assist at the coronation festivities of the Holy Roman emperor Maximilian I of Habsburg who had secured, by marrying Mary of Burgundy , the Netherlands to his empire. In this ''Oratio'' Barbarus explicitly relates the fact that he was created a knight by Maximilian on the occasion of that visit in Bruges ( pp 14). USTC 743251. GW 03346. Polain 493.
