Description :

4to, pp. [ii], 529 + blanks. Manuscript in ink on ruled paper. Original half purple roan, textured cloth boards, spine lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers. A little foxing and dustsoiling at the beginning. Binding rubbed at extremities. Inscribed on the second flyleaf 'Matilda Florence Bangs with the love & best wishes of her affectionate brother, Frederic C.P. Robinson' A manuscript guide to correct pronunciation compiled by Frederic Charles Patey Robinson, 'Late professor of Elocution and Dramatic culture to the National School of Opera, New York, and Instructor of Elocution at the College of the City of New York, etc. etc.' (title-page). The Prefatory Note is signed Brighton, March 1903. Robinson (1832-1912) was born in London and took to the stage early, playing at Sadler's Wells in the 1850s and Drury Lane in the 1860s, before moving to America for several decades, where he evidently turned to teaching. In 1896 he returned to London to join the Lyceum Company under Henry Irving. Robinson compiled this reference to correct pronunciation late in life, and may have hoped to publish it, though it appears to have been given to his younger sister, who had remained in London and married, instead. In his preface he complains of the recent decline in standards of pronunciation on the stage, as well as in the pulpit and even some 'small proportion of our members of parliament' The contents attempt to preserve 'correct' Victorian pronunciation against the coming Edwardian trends.
