A propos de cet article

Octavo, pp. [i-iii] iv [5] 6-96, fly leaves at front and rear, numerous woodcut illustrations, uncredited, but perhaps by the author, original pictorial green cloth, front cover stamped in gold and black, rear panel stamped in blind, brown coated endpapers. First edition. Oriental fantasy recording the adventures of a young Indian blacksmith who wishes to marry the Mogul's daughter, becomes a magician, and undertakes a quest into the "Bloody and Horrible Land" to the palace of the Queen of the Amazons. Pitzmaroon, a chivalrous and resourceful hero, overcomes all obstacles in his path (besting the Gnome King in a wrestling match, slaying a Giant, transformation into a parrot, etc.) and marries both the Amazon queen and the Mogul's daughter. In the best tradition of the form, this short fairy tale combines equal measures of whimsy, gore and an abiding strangeness. The somewhat crude and often grotesque illustrations are quite spirited. "Charming book; a good read." - Stuart A. Teitler. Allibone notes that "Charles Beach" may be a pseudonym and Reginald attributes this book to British novelist Mayne Reid (1818-1883) but NCBEL lists LOST LEONORE . (1864) as the only publication by Reid using the Charles Beach pseudonym. This book, copyright 1873 by Charles A. Beach, appears to be of American origin. Teitler 98. Bleiler (1978), p. 17. Reginald 00970. Cloth lightly worn at spine ends, some spotting to the endpapers, a very good copy. (#149923). N° de réf. du libraire 149923
