Description du livre 1799. Hardcover. État : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. Pizarro; A Tragedy in Five Acts; As Performed at the Theatre Royal in Drury lane: Taken From The German Drama Kotzebue; and Adapted to the English Stage by Richard Brinsley Sheridan. Printed for James Ridgway in 1799. A Fifth Edition. Size : 5 x 8 inches. Page number: 79. This book has been rebound in a somewhat non-professional fashion, and it is possible that the pages have been cut to fit the smaller binding since the title page is not centered and the edges of the pages look like they might have been cut. The original content, though very slightly foxed, is clean however. The title page is tanned and foxed. The name of a previous owner is stamped on tis page. N° de réf. du libraire 000606

Description du livre London: printed for James Ridgway, 1799. 8vo, pp. [viii], 76, [3] epilogue; disbound. Early inscription on title 'Capt. Mordaunt Walton on Avon'. First edition of this adaptation. ESTC suggests that there are two variants of the ending of Act IV on p. 64: in this copy the last sentence reads 'No!---thought and memory and are my Hell'. Adapted from Kotzebue's Die Spanier in Peru, this play was phenomenally popular as a publication, running to 21 editions (many of them no doubt printed from standing type and probably actually reissues) before the end of its first year, as well as editions in Dublin, Cork, Belfast, New York, Philadelphia and Charles-Town, Massachusetts. Description du livre London: Printed for James Ridgway, 1799., 1799. [8],76,[8]pp. Octavo. Full red crushed levant, gilt extra, t.e.g., others untrimmed, by Riviere. Light rubbing to joints, some discoloration from gilding in a few top margins, verso of last leaf and adverts a bit dust darkened and creased but a very good copy. With the bookplate of William H. Woodin (FDR's Secretary of the Treasury) and another. First edition, the issue on wove paper, with the paper watermarked 1796. A line below the imprint on the title-leaf calls for both a regular edition, 2s 6d, and "A superior Edition, on fine wove Paper, hot-pressed, Price 5s." Williams does not treat any differentiation between them, though ESTC notes a variant that may or may not have relevance. The variant reading in the final sentence of Act 4, "No living -- thought and memory are my hell," appears in this copy, and the 'p' in 'hot-pressed' shows signs of batter. The terminal adverts are dated 25 June 1799. A remarkably popular play - by 1800 Ridgway had issued a self-proclaimed 25th edition. WILLIAMS, p.234. ESTC T58786. N° de réf. du libraire WRCLIT 65265

Description du livre London: Printed for James Ridgway, 1799, 1799. First edition, fine paper issue. 8vo, stitched as issued, lacking all but some insignificant remains of the original drab wrappers on the spine, untrimmed, 79 pages + one blank. Four pages of publisher's ads dated 25 June 1799, preceding the title page. ? One of Sheridan's most popular plays, based on the Spaniards of Peru by Kotzebue, a story of Francisco Pizarro, the conqueror of the Incas. There were two issues of this first edition, one on ordinary paper and "A Superior Edition, on fine wove Paper, hot-pressed, Price 5s." This is one of the latter, with the paper watermarked 1796. Contemporary ink ownership signature at the foot of the title page. Outside pages a little soiled; very good copy, enclosed in a chemise and quarter morocco slipcase. NCBEL II, 820; Sabin 80340 (incorrectly calling for two plates). N° de réf. du libraire 19751
