Octavo, three volumes: pp. [i-v] vi-ix [x] [1] 2-304; [1-4] [1] 2-366; [1-4] [1] 2-381 [382: printer's colophon], title pages printed in red and black, three-quarter leather and marbled boards, a.e.g., marbled endpapers. First printing of the Hazlitt edition. Limited to 350 copies. John Brand's OBSERVATIONS ON POPULAR ANTIQUITIES ., which incorporated the whole of Henry Bourne's ANTIQUITATES VULGARES (1725), was published in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1777. Brand's work was republished in 1813 in an edition rearranged, revised and considerably expanded by Henry Ellis. "This mighty work laid the foundations for a science of folklore, and became a landmark in the history of English thought . Brand-Ellis became a vade mecum, an automatic reference and authority on antique custom and odd superstition." - Dorson, The British Folklorists: A History, pp. 17-8. Volume three is devoted to superstitions" and includes a 22-page section on "Fairy Mythology."
