Taking the title from Catholic convert John Dryden's 1687 poem, 'The Hind [Catholicism] and the Panther [Anglicanism],' Dominican theologian Aidan Nichols softens Dryden's polemical edge, yet finds in the poem salient points of departure for each chapter of this 'theological history of Anglicanism.' Nichols sets forth the Anglican Church as 'one of the most pluralistic of the historic churches. It has never had a single theological orthodoxy.' He affirms the essential accuracy and usefulness of the convenient delineation of its historical constituency in terms of Low Church (Lutheran, Calvinist, and pietistic), High Church (episcopal structure, essentially Catholic liturgy) and Broad Church (open to diverse theological emphases, relatively indifferent to binding classical Christian doctrine). The theological inquiry that overarches the historical narrative is whether this pluralism is the fruitful genius of Anglicanism, or whether it was a politically arbitrated amalgam of essentially contradictory parties that must tend toward ultimate fissure. Nichols (a former Anglican) is a master of historical detail, swiftly analyzing the original English Reformers, Hooker and the via media, the Caroline Divines, the Latitudinarians, Wesley and the Evangelical revival, the Oxford Movement, and the last century and a half of liberalism, modernism, and radicalism, while always returning the reader to the large questions he has posed.
