100-page catalogue, heavily illustrated, at which sale Warhol purchased a number of lots. About 120 lots listed have the hammer price in Warhol’s hand; half a dozen are circled, i.e., those he bought. On the back cover Warhol has written two friends’ phone numbers: "Lynn PL 31066" and "Sam 4770523". On page 40 at the top he scribbled "Francois de Menil", then crossed it out in ink. On the front cover (showing a wonderful Indian dress in green and yellow on a red background) one can see (when held against the light) the indentations of the half dozen or so cheques Andy wrote to Parke-Bernet, with the exact amounts and his repeated signatures. A pencil rubbing could easily be made from this. So the catalogue is signed by Warhol half a dozen times but via indentation, inkless. Why the cheques were signed in ’72 for a sale in ’71 is anyone’s guess. This catalogue came from lot no. 1554 in the Andy Warhol Collection Sotheby’s Sale, the lot containing catalogues he’d owned, of which this was the only one with his annotations.
