Montague Summers is most famous for his lurid books on witchcraft as well as his studies on Gothic romance. This is one of his last books. Summers traces the word mysticism " from the old Greek mysteries of Eleusis, through the Platonists, and down succeeding centuries until today. He then discusses various physical phenomena of mysticism, trances, ecstasy, rapts, and many more, grouping them around the prominent phenomena of stigmata, which invariably involves other extraordinary happenings" [from the dust jacket]. Chapters discuss ancient Greek mysticism, Christian mysticism, stigmata and saints. Chapter seven mentions diabolic stigmata, demoniacal and poltergeist molestations etc. N° de réf. du libraire 000924
