Synopsis : World-renowned pianist and pedagogue Jacob Lateiner is a prime example of the performer as scholar. A member of The Juilliard School faculty since 1966, Mr. Lateiner is an avid collector of musical first editions, letters, and other rare materials, and a notable lecturer on the subject of textual authenticity and its relationship to musical performance. This collection of essays in honor of his 70th birthday includes contributions by Mr. Lateiner's friends and colleagues that illuminate his interests. Contributors include Jeffrey Kallberg ("Voice" and the Nocturne"; Carl Schachter ("Playing What the Composer Didn't Write -- Analysis and Rhythmic Aspects of Performance"); Hilda and William Baumol (Maledizione! or, the Perilous Prospects of Beethoven' 5 Patrons"); Lewis Lockwood ("Beethoven's "Kakadu" Variations, op. 121a: A Study in Paradox"); Paul Zukofsky ("Caprice Roundel: Rage Over a Lost (But Not Forgotten) Blue-Book"); Albi Rosenthal: ("A Little Buck Out Of Its Stable: Some Corrections by Beethoven in a Copy of the First Edition of Opus 102"); Joel Lester ("Analysis and Performance in Schoenberg's Phantasy, op. 47"); Jane Gottlieb ("Elliott Carter's Piano Concerto and the Ford Foundation's Support of American Composers and Performers"); Susan Sommer ("Jacob Lateiner as Bibliophile and Collector"); Bruce Brubaker ("Strengen Sachlichkeit: The Teaching of Jacob Lateiner").
