Published in London, 1773 Although she was an African slave, Phillis Wheatley was one of the best-known poets in prenineteenth-century Boston, America. Negro servant to Mr. John Wheatley, of Boston, in New-England. SHE DIED DECEMBER 1785 AT AGE 31. In the year 1761, the child who was later to bear the famous name Phillis Wheatley, was brought over from Africa on one of the slave ships, and huddled along with many others of like unfortunate lot in the Boston slavemarket. Fortunate for the girl, apparently seven or eight years of age, she attracted the attention of Mrs. John Wheatley, a kindly, well-to-do lady, who purchased Phillis and gave her to two children, Nathaniel and Mary Wheatley, as their personal servant.
