Description :

. Major-General John M. Schofield, Brigadier General Alfred H. Terry, Colonel George W. Getty, members; Asa Bird Gardner, Judge Advocate, Uniteds States Army. 2 parts bound in 4 volumes (1868 pages & addenda page), 1 folding map, 1 large folding table, text tables, continuous full calf, rubbed & scuffed, text is very good. Gen. Porter (1822-1901) was court martialed by Gen. Pope for disobedience, disloyalty and misconduct in the face of the enemy during the Manassas (2nd Bull Run). Found guilty and cashiered Jan. 21, 1863, Porter fought a long hard battle to have his case reopened. This was finally done in 1878 and the proceedings published as above. This board found him not guilty and recommended remission of his sentence but this was not acted upon until May 1883. Pope and McDowell come off badly as these proceedings point to a conspiracy on their part to cover up their own mismanagement of the campaign by making a scapegoat of Porter (who was friendly to McLellan). Although still a subject of controversy, most historians now agree with the findings of this board. N° de réf. du libraire 3542
