Octavo, pp. [1-4] 5-318 [320: printer's imprint], original pictorial blue cloth, front and spine panels stamped in black and white. First edition. A prequel to Doke's THE SECRET CITY (1913), a lost race adventure novel which described the discovery of a lost city in Kalahari Desert occupied by a people of ancient Egyptian descent. The prequel, set two hundred years earlier, provides an account of life and loves of Reinhild, the kingdom's ruler and perhaps a semi-immortal woman. An editorial "postscript" to the novel (Doke, a South African Baptist minister, died in 1913) indicates that that author's intent was to criticize the theories of Nietzsche: "if Reinhild . had not been born more than two hundred years ago, it would have been impossible not to conclude that Friedrich Nietzsche had greatly influenced her." Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 70. Bleiler (1978), p. 62. Reginald 04443. Cloth rubbed at head and tail of spine panel, corner tips, and along outer hinges, ink stain at tail of spine panel, top edge of text block a bit dusty, endpapers a bit darkened, still a tight, very good copy. An uncommon book rarely found in nice condition. (#148813). N° de réf. du libraire 148813
