Description :

Octavo, cloth-backed boards. First edition. The scarce hardbound issue; reportedly only 1000 copies so bound. The author's first book and the first book of the Radix Tetrad sequence that "works as a complex meditation on metamorphosis elaborated within a space opera frame, so that densely ambitious moments of poetic aspiration alternate with episodes out of the rag-and-bone shop of pulp magazine fiction; this early use of space opera as frame or arena for baroque exfoliations of story immediately prefigures the similarly exorbitant work of Iain M. Banks and Dan Simmons . After losing her radiation shield, which guards her against the full nakedness of the universe, Earth begins to mutate savagely, a transformation articulated clearly in RADIX itself through the story of a mutant superman, who undergoes the same transcendental jumpstart that jolts his planet through terrors and dimensions. - John Clute, SFE (online). 1981 Nebula nominee. Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-55. A review slip and Attanasio's cover letter, reproduced on William Morrow stationery, forwarding review copies to SFWA members are laid into this copy. A fine copy in fine dust jacket. (#86764). N° de réf. du libraire

Description du livre New York: Morrow, 1981. dj, 1981. Hardcover first edition - First printing. His first novel, and probably his best so far, set 13 centuries in the future on an earth devasted by alien energy, and populated by mutated humans. Nominated for the Nebula Award. Very uncommon in the hardcover edition, since this was published simultaneous in both hardcover and trade paperback. Reportedly the first hardcover publication was only 1000 copies, and many, if not most, probably went to libraries as this copy did. Attractive dust jacket art by Fred Marcellino. 467 pp. Ex-library with markings and significant reading wear, tape reinforcements to the edges of the boards, but in a very good- unmarked dust jacket (some wear to the top of the dj spine.) Although this is a first edition - the only hardcover edition - this is a reading copy only with most of the value in the dust jacket. N° de réf. du libraire 32379

Description du livre William Morrow & Co., Inc., New York, 1981. Cloth. État : Very Good Plus. Etat de la jaquette : Near Fine. Fred Marcellino (illustrateur). First Edition. New York: William Morrow & Co., Inc., 1981. First Edition, and so stated and numbered. One of 1,000 copies. Jacket design by Fred Marcellino, book design by Michael Mauceri. Octavo, 467 pp. Ex-library, with standard markings for that, else in remarkable, sharp, bright handsome condition. Library traces include rubber stamp at page edges, pocket which has been adhered to rear fep, label on jacket spine. Book is other Very Good plus or a bit better. Jacket is price clipped, is otherwise near fine, and quite bright. Certainly the best known - and hardest to acquire as a first edition - of the titles produced by New Jersey-born science fiction writer A. A. Attanasio (Alfred Angelo Attanasio], Radix was the first novel in his Radix Tetrad. An imaginative pre-apocalyptic tale occurring 1300 years in the future and written in an eclectic style of much appeal at the time, Radix won a nomination for the Best Novel Nebula Award in 1981. A hard-to-find piece of sci-fi history, nicely preserved. L104. N° de réf. du libraire 001087

Description du livre William Morrow & Company, New York, 1981. Hardcover. État : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Good+. First Edition. Very Good 1st Ed in Good+ $-clipped jacket 8vo. The first edition was limited to 1000 copies. This is a handsome library retiree, brown 1/4 cloth & gilt titles spine, perfect bound, sienna paperboards with two trivial faults. (Tape remnants on pastedowns; blindstamp on TP, pocket removal R endpaper.) Certainly Attanasio's best book. ; Ex-Library; 467 pages; Ambitious, cosmic-scale-but-flawed first novel, Aug 7, 2001, Reviewer: AndyC from Canberra, Australia: I am glad that I read the later, harder-SF "Centuries" before "Radix". Attanasio operates well as either a hard SF writer or as a metaphysical fantasist. In this, his first book, he tries to be both at once and it doesn't quite work. "Radix" is a saga of a far-future Earth in which mutation has gone rampant after a cosmological cataclysm. Daringly, lead character Sumner Kagan starts off as a screwed-up, homicidal, obese urban teenager. Through the several hundred pages, he transforms into a battered-but-charismatic hero and troubled demigod. Kagan, the divers supporting characters and some of the Big Ideas are great: I was satisfyingly creeped out by the concept of a powerful AI spying on the world through the senses of millions of synthetic "wild animals". However, the highly metaphysical treatment of the nature of once of the species, and of "life force" generally leaves something to be desired, the "Love Reigns Supreme" moral is a tad heavy-handed, and the pseudoscientific rationalisations that appear here and there are bogus enough to break belief for any reader with any scientific nous. Then there is the writing style. Later Attanasio is lyrical and reads beautifully and easily. Here, he overdoes it. Some sentences are elliptical to the point of incoherence. Pretentiously florid aDJectives are piled on top of hopelessly inappropriate metaphors. The overall effect is a bit like "Covenant"-era Stephen Donaldson trying to write a Greg Bear novel by channeling acidheads from Zeta Reticuli. Appeals to some, I suppose, but I am glad he grew out of it. NB: the extensive esoteric internal dialog of some characters, and the names-dates-and-glossary appendix. I can see why some readers are reminded of "Dune". N° de réf. du libraire 15612
