Description :

Octavo, pp. [1-2] [1-8] 9-293 [294: blank], eleven inserted plates with illustrations by Frank R. Paul, original blue cloth, front and spine panels stamped in gold. First edition. Signed and inscribed by Gernsback to "my good old friend Paul Samplinger" in May 1959 on a tipped in leaf preceding the front free endpaper. Widely acclaimed upon its initial appearance as a serial in Gernsback's magazine, MODERN ELECTRICS, in 1911, the interplanetary novel by "the father of science fiction" is virtually unreadable today. However, historically, its impact and the prominence of its author in the science fiction field, elevates it to cornerstone status in the science fiction genre. Anatomy of Wonder (1976) 2-80; (1981) 1-77; (1987) 1-37; (1995) 1-37; and (2004) II-431. Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 863. Clareson, Science Fiction in America, 1870s-1930s 335. Lewis, Utopian Literature, p. 70. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 90 (Locke variant A, but with top edge unstained; no priority established). Sargent, British and American Utopian Literature, 1516-1985, Additions. Survey of Science Fiction Literature IV, pp. 1751-54. In 333. Bleiler (1978), p. 81. Reginald 05900. Early ownership stamps of George Hudson of Pine City, N.Y., on front free endpaper and half title page, tiny photograph of Gernsback clipped from a magazine affixed to title page, a very good copy with bright cover stamping. (#149327). N° de réf. du libraire

BRAND NEW, Ralph 124C41+: A Romance of the Year 2660, Jack Williamson, Hugo Gernsback, By the year 2660, science has transformed and conquered the world, rescuing humanity from itself. Spectacular inventions from the farthest reaches of space and deep beneath the earth are available to meet every need, providing antidotes to individual troubles and social ills. Inventors are highly prized and respected, and they are jealously protected and lavishly cared for by world governments. That support and acclaim, however-as the most brilliant of scientists, Ralph 124C 41+, discovers-is not without its price. This visionary novel of the twenty-seventh century was written by Hugo Gernsback (1887-1964), founder of the influential magazine Amazing Stories. Marvelously prophetic and creative, Ralph 124C 41+ celebrates technological advances and entrances readers with an exuberant, unforgettable vision of what our world might become. This commemorative edition makes this landmark tale widely available for the first time in decades and features the prized Frank R. Paul illustrations from the rare first edition, a list of inventions and technological devices, and Hugo Gernsback's prefaces to the first and second editions. Jack Williamson is the author of numerous classic novels, including The Humanoids and Three from the Legion. He was recently inducted into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame.
