Description :

Large octavo, seventeen issues, mimeographed, self wrappers, stapled. Seventeen of the twenty issues of this rare and important fanzine, all issues of which are virtually impossible to find now. This file lacks the first two issues and the December 1940 issue (a photocopy of the latter is present). Koenig, an electrical engineer, worked at the Electrical Testing Laboratories in Manhattan from 1912 until 1953 when he was elected to ETL's Board of Directors, on which he served until his death in 1959. Koenig, an avid book collector and bibliophile, assembled a collection of more than 1500 books and bound volumes of magazines, the core of which was fantasy Literature. Koenig's regular column "Of Books and Things" is largely devoted to commentary on and reviews of old fantasy fiction, Webb's THE MUMMY, Butler's EREWHON, Prevot's GHOSTIES AND GHOULIES, and more. The June 1944 issue, devoted to the work of William Hope Hodgson, contains essays by Koenig, H. P. Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith, August Derleth, E. A. Edkins, Ellery Queen, Fritz Leiber, Jr., and an anonymous "appreciation" which originally appeared in a British newspaper. The last four issues serialize "Modern Mythological Fiction," a long, informative essay by Ensign Butman. The final issue, October 1946, includes an article on William Hope Hodgson by John Wilstach and responses to Butman's essay by Fritz Leiber, Jr. (3 pages) and Duane W. Rimel (2 pages). Pavlat and Evans, Fanzine Index (1965), p. 90. Warner, All Our Yesterdays, pp. 19-20. The first leaf of the final issue is wrinkled and detached from staples, the last leaves are detached from staples of two other issues, and two issues are present as loose sheets (the staples removed at some time in the past), the issues are very good to mostly fine overall. Accompanied by a 23-page privately published booklet, H. C. KOENIG READER AND COLLECTOR: A BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH WITH AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY by Eugene J. Biancheri (2004). (#131556).
