Description :

48pp. Printed in tabloid style, in 2 columns and on paper resembling newsprint (and possibly ghost-written by the king of tabloid writing, Jack Lait) Ruth Snyder's Own True Story is a high point of the True Crime genre. The tale of the first woman to be executed by electrocution, Ruth's story had all the elements to excite the public imagination -- a blonde, blue-eyed beauty in an unfulfilling marriage enters into an affair with a handsome married man (a corset salesman, no less). Together (and fueled by alcohol -- this was after all the middle of Prohibition!) they murdered Snyder's hapless husband. Snyder supposedly wrote out her account -- her "own true story" -- in her cell at Sing-Sing, using a typewriter lent to her by Jack Lait.~Illustrated by rather grainy black and white photographs of all the players, including Snyder's daughter. Snyder's sensational story was the basis for James M. Cain's Double Indemnity (adapted for the screen by Billy Wilder and Raymond Chandler). Ron Hansen's novel A Wild Surge of Guilty Passion is based on Snyder's story as well. Tom Howard's actual photograph of Ruth Snyder as she's being electrocuted made it onto the front page of the New York Daily News the next day and is one of the iconic images of the era. A scarce and fragile item (we locate only 2 institutional holdings). In the original orange wrappers, with an old scotch tape repair to the spine. Good binding. N° de réf. du libraire 266582
