The Millard copy Supplement I. consists of a title and 150 plates numbered I-CL. In our copy the title is numbered plate I. Bound in 6 uniform half leather volumes, with marbled boards, raised gilt back. Some wear at he extremities, most corners slightly bumped, some marbled paper missing, but in all a fine set with the plates finely printed on stainless and strong paper. (See Milliard 123, Berlin Catalogue 2599, Cohen/de Ricci 750-751). Jean François de Neufforge (Liège-Belgium 1714 - Paris 1791) conceived the plan for this vast undertaking in 1755. It was finished in 1780 and ruined the author. According some authors (e.g. Wend von Kalnein) this publication is the most important theoretical work of the period. Neufforge built little or nothing himself, his powers of invention being channelled into the creation of these 900 designs, allmost all engraved by himself. Published with the approval of the Paris Academy, they demonstrate the fusion of the French academic tradition with the growing interest in antiquity, and so became a major influence in the growth of neo-classicism.
