Recuerdos del Convento de S. Francisco. Calle de la Independencia. Polka Mazurka
Folio, pp. Sheet music with illustrated lithographic cover showing the demolition of part of the Convent of San Francisco in order to open the street - Calle de Independencia - in downtown Mexico City. (This major street in the heart of the city is now called 16 of September St.) Portrayed are the crumbling ruins and some of the demolition work. The image is a particularly fine city-scape of the old Mexico City - the City of Palaces and Convents - as it was being remade to its modern configuration. Tovar-Teresa, in The City of Palaces, vol. II, p 35, notes that the construction work was done in 1856 -- hence my dating of the item -- and that the illustration was done to illustrate a calendar, as well as this polka, and was even part of a collection called Recuerdos del Convento de S. Francisco. This copy of the lithograph is in remarkable fine, clean condition, and even the thin paper cover of the sheet music has survived, only slightly less pristine. N° de réf. du libraire 7024
