First edition of the beautiful collection of truly unforgettable stories by Babel. Wonderful writings of the Jew amongst the Cossacks, life in Russia; written, even in English, to make your brain cry. (Babel was killed by Stalin in some camp for some reason in the late 1930’s.) The only English-language work of his published during his lifetime except for Benia Krik. Published in the exact same translation simultaneously by Knopf in England (see previous entry), though with a different name (female) given to the (male) translator, who also wrote the Introduction. One a man, one a woman. Strange. Other difference is the frontispiece ñ in this the American version, the stunning silhouette of the Cossacks riding is about twice the size. Red dust jacket, extremely scarce. N° de réf. du libraire 23
